The Creative Activist Contest0 Comments
Born in London, Dan Eldon grew up in Nairobi Kenya, where he discovered the power of “creative activists” who tackled challenges in their neighborhoods and communities with innovative, impactful solutions. At the age of 21, Dan became a photojournalist in Somalia in 1991, where he shot images that helped launch a global relief mission to bring aid to the troubled country. On July 12th, 1993, a U.N. bombing in Mogadishu targeting a Somali war lord caused several hundred casualties. Called by survivors to shoot the carnage, Dan and three colleagues traveled to the site, where they were attacked, stoned and beaten to death by a frenzied mob. Dan was 22 years old.
After his death, his family found 17 black-bound leather journals filled vivid collages about his world that have provided inspiration to countless artists, photographers and filmmakers across the globe. Dan’s spirit of creative activism lives on through the Creative Visions Foundation, which supports and empowers “Creative Activists” like Dan who seek innovative solutions to local and global issues and use arts and media to ignite positive change.
